Care Guide
Follow our helpful tips for protecting and caring for your jewellery, and rely on our service so you can enjoy wearing it for a long time.
Protection & Care
How often and how you wear your jewellery leaves its own personal mark over time. Many pieces are designed for everyday wear β but rings and bracelets come into contact with other surfaces more frequently and are therefore more delicate. Careful handling is worthwhile, as their fine facets cannot be replicated.
Avoid friction & impacts
Removing the jewellery before physical activity is a simple way to protect it from unnecessary wear and tear.
Rings and bracelets especially benefit from a break during sports, gardening, or anywhere they might rub against something. Wearing several pieces at once can also leave marks over time β this is perfectly normal, but good to know.
Proper storage & transport
To keep your jewellery looking beautiful for a long time, it's best not to store it loosely next to each other β especially when you're out and about!
If the pieces bump against each other, it can damage the surface or the tarnish protection. They prefer a soft home, for example in a jewellery pouch or a small box. And very importantly: store them in a dry place and protect them from direct sunlight.
Avoid liquids & chemicals
Important note β please apply lotion and perfume first, then put on your jewellery!
This way you avoid direct contact with chemical substances that can attack the surface and tarnish protection of your pieces.
Even when swimming in the sea or washing your hands, it's a good idea to give your jewellery a short break. If it does get wet, simply dry it carefully with a silver polishing cloth.
Cleaning service
Silver jewellery has chemical properties that cause it to change over time. But don't worry β we'll explain why this happens and how you can have your jewellery refurbished with us.
While there are many home remedies online that claim to help you clean tarnished silver jewellery, we advise against them, as they can actually damage the pieces. Instead, we offer a simple and safe service where you send us your jewellery and we professionally clean it for you.
Write a message to our support team so we can send you the address of our workshop and refurbish your jewellery.
Chemical reaction of silver
You may have noticed that silver jewellery can darken over time β this is due to the natural reaction of silver to its environment.
Unlike gold, silver reacts chemically with sulfur compounds in the air, such as hydrogen sulfide (HβS), which originates from car exhaust, industrial waste, or even certain foods like eggs or onions. This reaction produces silver sulfide (AgβS) β visible as a dark to black layer on the surface. This process is called sulfurization and is the main reason why silver jewellery tarnishes over time.
Oxygen can also have an effect, especially when silver is exposed to both moisture and air. This leads to further oxidation β both of which are natural parts of the aging process of silver.
Discoloration in 'Vermeil'
Our gold-plated jewellery is made from recycled RJC 935 silver, which is coated with a 3-micron layer of 750 gold β this is called 'Vermeil'.
Like all jewellery, gold-plated pieces naturally changes over time. Friction, perspiration, or contact with chemicals can cause the gold layer to slowly wear away, revealing the silver underneath.
Even through small pores, silver can react with oxygen and sulfur compounds in the air, leading to a darker discolouration.
Natural pH value of the skin
The natural pH value of our skin also influences the tarnishing of gold-plated and silver-plated jewellery.
Our skin has a slightly acidic pH value, typically between 4.7 and 5.75, which is created by the acid mantle. This mantle is composed of sweat, sebum, and other substances and forms an environment on the skin's surface. Because this environment is slightly acidic, it can react with precious metals and gradually alter the coating.
However, how quickly or severely a piece of jewellery tarnishes depends on the individual and is influenced by factors such as skin type, sweat composition, and personal care habits.
Refresher service
If the gold plating fades over time, we'll make sure your jewellery shines again. During the gold plating refresh, the goldsmith focuses on the surface of your piece and re-gilds it.
Please note that extensive repairs, such as fixing dents or reshaping edges, are not possible. These minor imperfections are simply part of your jewellery's history, as natural wear and tear from contact with other objects can occur automatically.
Simply send us a photo of your jewellery and share all the relevant information with our support team. Once we receive your request, we will get back to you as soon as possible with a timeframe.
Warranty
You have two years from the delivery date to make claims under the statutory warranty. This covers manufacturing defects or hidden defects β but not normal wear and tear or improper care.
This includes, for example, discolouration, stains, scratches, dents, or any deformations that can occur through everyday wear. In such cases, we are happy to offer you an exchange, although additional production costs may apply β of course, you will receive a non-binding cost estimate beforehand.
If your piece of jewellery is defective upon delivery, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can take care of it.
To process your case quickly, please send us the following information by email:
1. Order number and purchase date
2. Photos of the piece of jewellery
3. Brief description of the problem
Please send all the information and a picture of your jewellery to our support team. Once we've reviewed everything, we'll get back to you.
